Motorists planning to travel on Interstate 15 near Tropicana Boulevard this weekend should take a detour.

Interstate I-15 was closed at 10 p.m. The Nevada Department of Transportation said vehicular traffic between Russell Road and Flamingo Road will remain open Friday and will remain open until 6 p.m. 5 am Monday to allow crews to dismantle the north half of the Tropicana Avenue Bridge over the Interstate.

"During the closure, detours will be in place at Russell and Flamingo. However, detours are expected to fill up quickly," said department spokesman Justin Hopkins. "We encourage drivers to avoid the area if possible or use navigation apps like Waze to re-plan previous backup routes."

Motorists traveling north on I-15 can exit at Russell, travel west on Decatur Avenue, travel north on Flamingo and return east to the freeway. Drivers traveling south on I-15 can do the opposite: exit at Flamingo, go west to Decatur, south to Russell, then east back to I-15. Other north-south alternatives include Airport Link, Valley View, Jones and Rainbow Boulevards.

NDOT and local law enforcement will work with uniformed personnel and marked patrol vehicles to set up detour routes. The Regional Transportation Board will monitor traffic in the area 24/7 during the closure and adjust signal timings as needed to ease congestion.

The Department of Transportation is also working with officials in California, Utah and Arizona and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Bureau to notify guests and resort runway employees of the closure.

The Tropicana Bridge over Interstate 15 is being rebuilt taller, wider and longer to increase capacity and improve safety for drivers and pedestrians.

The Tropicana, which has been closed to traffic since Jan. 23, will be reduced to two lanes in each direction when it reopens Monday.

The I-15 southbound ramp to Tropicana was closed for several months due to bridge and overpass ramp reconstruction.

I-15/Tropicana Project $305 millionIt will improve traffic flow in and around the Tropicana interchange, improve travel times and reliability on Interstate 15 and Tropicana, increase safety for all road users, and facilitate access to the resort corridor and Loyalty Stadium.

Upon completion, Tropicana will increase from 3 to 4 lanes in each direction, and the left turn lanes from Tropicana to I-15 will increase from 2 to 3 lanes.

A high-capacity semi-elevated crossing will be added to the south side of the Harmon Avenue bridge, adding a new entrance from Interstate 15 to the resort corridor.

Dean Martin Drive will be rerouted under the Tropicana and traffic signals will be removed from the Tropicana to improve traffic flow in the area.

The I-15 exit at Frank Sinatra Drive will be widened to two lanes and five new bulletin boards will be added to I-15 between Warm Springs Road and Tropicana.

Plans also call for an additional sidewalk between Tropicana and Arena Drive to create a new route for pedestrians traveling to and from T-Mobile Arena.

Work on the project began in May and is expected to continue until early 2025.
